In the first phase of the Holy 40 Project you engaged in certain tasks for forty days to find your predominant fault. This was done by putting into practice virtuous acts opposed to the capital vices. During the second phase of the Holy 40 Project you will continue the good work already begun with a sharper focus on your predominant fault. You will commit 12 weeks to this practice to establish the habits necessary to combat your vice.
Each of the capital vices are so called because from them flow other vices. Each capital vice has a collection of certain vices known as its “daughters” which specifically come from, and are the result of, a capital vice. In Phase 2 you will target your predominant fault, or the capital vice with which you struggle most, by rooting out its various daughters.
Once again, how these vices are to be rooted out are the grace of God and the practice of the contrary virtues. Al l of the virtues find their crown in that single virtue which most fully defines sanctity: charity. The key to Phase 2 (and Phase 1) of the Holy 40 Project is charity.
Charity, the greatest theological virtue, has God for its object as well as for its source. But charity, it must not be forgotten, also directs the love of neighbor and the love of ourselves to God. For charity is the love of God for His own sake and the love of neighbor for the sake of God and we are commanded by Christ to love our neighbor and ourselves with the same love the “love of God which is poured out into our hearts.” (Romans 5:5)
Phase 2 is dedicated to building virtue in relation to all things for the greater glory of God. This awesome task, which is God’s work of sanctification in us, begins and ends in charity. How fitting therefore that we should break Phase 2 down into what must be done in relation to God, neighbor, and ourselves.
What is The Holy 40 Project?
The solution to the grave moral and spiritual evils, which have come to pervade our society, is the same as it has ever been – WE MUST BECOME SAINTS! The holiness to which we are called is a perfection in the virtues through which we are conformed to God’s will. The spiritual strength of virtue is a basic and necessary line of defense in the spiritual and moral combat of our day. It is urgent that we begin to build up the virtues required of God’s saints if we are going to win the battle for our own soul and help save the souls of others. The Holy40 Project will promote holiness by helping individuals recognize and overcome their vices.
